Thanks for the additional info. I certainly appreciate the sharing done by those who know!
It appears the 3rd infantry was attached(?) to the 159 infantry regiment which in turn was attached(?) to the 7th infantry division while in the Aleutians. In May 1944, my relative left the Aleutians. From May 1944 until March 1945 I know he was in the States getting additional training and got married. In March 1945 the 159th left the US for Europe and, once there, were attached(?) to the 106th infantry division until the war ended and they were shipped back to the US. In my relative's case that was August 1945.
I hope I wrote that correctly as I'm not used to military terms quite yet.
