I am assuming you are talking about the 3rd Infantry Regiment and not the 3rd Infantry Division. The 3rd Division has its own web page. The 3rd IR was attached to the 106th Infantry Division in March 1945 and operated German POW camps along the Rhine River. Check out the 106th web page. Before entering Europe the 3rd IR was garrisoned in Greenland. There is not much information on the 3rd IR.
Where did you get the information on the subject heading of your post? Do you have a copy of your father-in-law's discharge document? There may be more information on that. What information do you have about his time in the Aleutians. Was he on either Attu or Kiska islands or Dutch Harbor? Keep up your post on what you find.
