William J Cahill-USS Virginia/Apache
Hi,
I'm seeking information/pictures about the USS Virginia and USS Apache. They were in service during World War One. My great grandfather, William Joseph Cahill, entered the service on May 24, 1915. He served on the USS Virginia. the time of his service on this ship is unknown. In February and October 1918, he was stationed aboard the USS Apache. (letters to my great grandmother that are dated) I have a photo of him with the crew of a ship. (fairly large ship) I suspect it is early on in his career. (He has the insignia of a enisign, I think)-One stripe.-Sometime in 1920, he was discharged as a 3rd mate. (SS Steel Age.)
The places that I know he was were: Savannah, GA and New Oreleans, 1920, SS Steel Age. and Newport, Rhode Island (date unknown, still researching)
I would appreciate any information about the ships, or about my great grandfather's time in the service. Eventually, I would like to order his pension, but I am missing a exact discharge date and service number. Do these details matter since I have alot of the essential data needed. (name, dates, elistment. birthplace....) Is that is enough data to find the right person?
Thanks,
Stefan
