Stefan:
I sent the burial record in the Long Island National Cemetery for Sophie A. Cahill; I just found:
William Cahill
BM 2C US Navy Mexican Border, World War I
b: 5 Sep 1892...(if you recall, in the 1900 census, his b.d. was Sep 1892)
death date: 24 Jun 1952
Service started: 24 May 1915
Interment Date: 27 June 1952
Cemetery: Long Island National Cemetery
2040 Wellwood Ave Farmingdale, NY 11735
Section O, site 35466
(Sophie's site is Section O, Site 35466)
In National cemeteries, they bury deep; one on top of the other; her info would be displayed on the back of his monument. Also, The Cemetery would have records on William, as they require the DD214 (that's what it's called today)and in 1952, it would also have been called that)
You could write to them and obtain his service record, but you would have to document your relationship to him and Sophie.
BTW, where did your family obtain the birthdate for William?
You told me 1895, Sept 12-15????
Do you think these are your gr grandparents??

PS: you may write to me at home, [email protected]; it would save time logging in and out...
