Medal for Saint Mihiel (Médaille de Saint-Mihiel), 1918

Circular bronze medal with laterally pierced ball suspension; the face with a classical full-length female figure holding the stars and stripes flag of the United States of America in her right hand, her left arm raised, finger pointing towards the enemies of the American soldiers in combat behind her, inscribed ‘ST-MIHIEL 1918’ and signed ‘F. FRAISSE’; the reverse with a map of the Saint Mihiel sector surmounted by a helmet, a shield and a palm branch above the inscription in English and in French ‘12 & 13 Sept 1918 The American Troops operating victoriously in the St. Mihiel Secteur (sic) broke the resistance of the enemy and captured 13,300 prisoners. Les Troupes Americaines operant victorieusement dans le Secteur de St. Mihiel ont brisé la résistance de l’ennemie et ont fait 13,300 prisonniers'; with bronze assay mark on the rim; on original ribbon. The medal was created by the Conseil Municipal of the town of Saint Mihiel on 15 February 1936 to honour the American soldiers of the 1st American Army under General Pershing who, on 12 and 13 September 1918, successfully attacked the Saint Mihiel salient which was impeding communications between Paris and Nancy and helped pave the way to victory on the Western Front.
