I am seeking information about 3rd Co. 164th D. B Bn, the 79th Balloon Battalion. My grandfather, Irving Winkler, was a part of this battalion. He was drafted in 1918, sent to Fort Riley in Manhattan, trained as a machine gunner, and was sent to Kelly Field in San Antonio, Texas. His job was to use the machine gun to defend the balloon crew if the enemy approached while they were aloft spying out the land. After he finished training, his company was on board a train to go overseas, but the Armistice was signed while they were enroute in Georgia and he was sent back without making it to Europe.
If anyone can direct me to more information, I would very much appreciate it. My family owns a panoramic photography of the balloon company and the commanding officers. It is about a yard long.
