Seeking info of John Henry Welch / TX (Army)

I have been trying to locate information on my great uncle, John Henry Welch b. April 1887 in Richards, Montgomery County, TX, s/o William Henry Welch & Artimitia Mills. He appears on the 1900 Census in Montgomery County living with his parents but I haven't been able to locate his 1910 census, nor his Draft registration. The only family information on him is that he was in WWI and died in France. I haven't found any newspaper clippings to substantiate this and he doesn't show up in the county casualties lists that I've found. However, I did just find a John Henry Welch listed on an ancestry.com database that died by accident and he was from Richards, TX. I, hoping against all hope, sent off for a service record request with what little information I had and the search was returned from St. Louis unsuccessful.

Any ideas on how to proceed to obtain information about him, I'm very unfamiliar with WWI records but I am aware of the NARA 1973 fire.

Thanks for any advice that you may provide!
Janna Welch-Henry
