It may have nothing to do with Roy Peterson, but as an aside, 12,000 young recruits, wanting to learn to fly, ended up in the "Spruce Battalion", that is, they were sent to Washington State, and they cut spruce trees to build the airplanes that they hoped to fly. An entire battalion had dreams of fighting the Red Baron but ended up as lumberjacks.
