You don't say if your man in British or American. Von R was killed in April 1918 and he ever faced an American, unless that American was serving with the RFC/RAF.
It was not the job of Aerial Observers/Photographers to photograph dogfights. Their job was to photograph the ground. Snapping pictures in the air during a fight was suicide, which is why there are very few actual air to air combat pictures.
