All military service records are held by the National Archives www.archives.gov But you need to have a family connection and they had a fire in 1973 which burned abt 80% of Army/AirForce service records from abt SpAm War to abt Korean War. Naval/Marine service records were not stored at the NARA in 1973. You can read more details at the the website. Check the Vetrans Affairs Dept about their records of the time.
You would also need more information that born late 1880's. Do you know where born? when he died? where buried? Wife's name, if married? The cemetery might have a birth date and have military information if he had Military Honors at burial.
There are 18 Dennis Cahills in 1900 NY census none born after 1879. There are 9 in 1930 NY census with only one b. late 1880s-1888 and he reports NO to Veteran question.
