In the 1930 Census Earnest L. Leonard b. abt 1877 in Indiana, living in Fowler, Benton County Indiana answered thet Yes he was a Veteran and a notation in margin lists of Sp Mex WW. (wife Alice b. 1893,NC married abt 12 yrs)

Ancestry has a database U.S. Army, Register of Enlistsments 1798 to 1914. There are two 3 year enlistments for a Earnest L. Leonard b. abt 1876 in Fayette County Indiana age 30 yrs 7 months, occ:Laborer, enlisted June 11, 1907 at Col or Cal Bks by a Capt Ruffier,
Blue Eyes, Bld Hair, 5'81/2", Discharged June 10, 1910 in Plattsburgh Bks, NY, Pvt, Execl Solider
2nd enlistment: same vitals but age now 33 yrs 7 mos, enlisted June 11, 1910 in Plattsburgh Bks, NY by Maj Dutcher, occ:Solider, Discharged June 10, 1913 at a camp near Gettysburg, PA, exper ser, Pvt, exlcnt h&f.
Both enlistments he served in 5th Inf, Co K.

1910 NY Clinton Co. Plattsburg (Plattsburgh) Ward 6 census taken April 28th 1910 Ernest L. Leonard, enlisted man age 33 single, born IN, parents IN, Pvt U.S. Army.

Col could be Colorado, Cal could be California. Bks=Barracks or look in Iowa as that is where the family is living in 1885, Ida County. Iowa State Census. He could have enlisted from Iowa for Spanish American War 1898-99. If he stayed in the service after SpA and after 1913 then he might have been part of the U.S. Troops sent into in Mexico, between 1914-1917.

If you know when he died ahave you seen his Obituary? If not it might mention Military Srevice since it seems he might have had about 20 yrs in.
