SSG Modlin - I checked the 314th Engineer titles that I do have, which covers companies A, E, and F of that regiment. No Modlin's seen. There are hsitories for Companies B and D, but nothing for C and the HQ Company that I am aware of. WWI Engineer regiments only had those companies, so you have a 5/7ths chance of finding in in the published unit histories. These might be very hard to locate - you cna try inter-library loan through your local library and maybe you will get lucky. Titles for the one's I can't examine are:
"History of CO D, 314th Engineers" {no printer, no author} 1919 and "Company B, 314th Engineers, A Chapter from America's Book of Glory in the Great War" by Paul A. Marin, Chicago: Foster, 1919. Another place to look is on a website called www.thedigitalbookshelf.com which specializes in making and selling CD's that contain scanned copies of WWI histories. Go tot he page on the 89th division and see one has been created that has any of the 314th engineer resources on it - the site was down when I tried a couple of minutes ago or I would have checked on my own. Another place to start is www.kshs.org/library/soldiers.htm
This is a military reference site that tells about resources you can use to research Kansas vets. The section on WWI (go to state archives entry under WWI)has some items that might at least offer some places to dig out additional info... you'd most likely have to visit in person to do the research but maybe they respond to requests.
That's all I have to offer in the way of hints -
