In the Harrison County Va/WV Court Minute Book, 1784-1792, [images available on line at the hackerscreek.com website, under the gedcoms link]
has 3 entries for a Jacob Crouch. This is not the Jacob Crouch who was the son of Andrew Crouch and Judith Westfall, he would only be abt 9 years old when these entries were recorded.
The first entry is on Page 34, dated March 15, 1785, and says Jacob Crouch proved power of attorney from Catharine Riffle, admitted to record
The second entry is on Page 46, dated June 21, 1785, and says Jacob Crouch vs Jacob Riffle. Dismissed
The third entry is on Page 49, dated June 22, 1785 and it says Patrick Hamilton take the same,
[list of tithables] from Jacob Crouch's to County Line
Some have said that maybe this was a transcription error, and that these entries should have been for Joseph Crouch, however the entry right before the 3rd one for Jacob Crouch [also on Page 49, dated June 22, 1785, says Henry Delay take the same [tithables] from Petty's Fort up to Joseph Crouch's, so I believe the entries for Jacob are correct.
There are no more entries for Jacob Crouch, and I have yet to find any records [tax, census, ect.]
for a Jacob Crouch in this area at that time, and wondered if maybe he was either another son of John Crouch Sr, or possibly a brother, who died or was killed, which would explain his absence after 1785. In the 1785 tax list for Harrison County, there is an entry for a Hanna Crouch as head of household with 3 others living there, and the thought occured to me she could be the widow of this Jacob, would anyone have any knowledge that pertains to the identity of this Jacob Crouch? Thanks Randy
