According to both the 1860 and 1870 census of Barbour County, Phoebe Sherman was a daughter of John and Sarah Sherman. Sarah Sherman, age 75, died March 23,1889 in Barbour County. The death records show that she was born in Shenandoah County,VA and her parents were John and Phebe Hymes. I found no other information on John Sherman. He was listed as being 86 years of age in the 1880 census of Barbour County. The name appears under several different spellings in the Barbour County records.
