Bill Elliott Elliott Family Tree
PRESTON NAMES OF NOTE
By R. Doyne Halbritter
President, Preston County W.Va. Historical Society
The introduction of the Elliott family to Preston County as described by Morton in his history of Preston County cannot be improved upon, so here it is.
Abraham, William, and Edward Elliott were brothers who left the James River after the close of the French, and Indian War, and settled in Fayette County, Pennsylvania , Elliottsville, receiving it’s name from them. Abraham was single, and Edward moved on to Kentucky. Thomas, oldest of the sons of William, made a trip to Preston, and this caused Abraham a younger son (of William), to do the same. In 1793, at the age of 20 he walked to Morgantown, and thence to the cabin of John Daugherty which stood a little East of Albright on the John C. Crane farm. He remained several days. The pioneer Daugherty had a daughter named Jane. The youth told the pioneer that he liked Jane, and must have her. The pioneer diplomatically referred the decision to the maiden herself, who declared the acquaintance to brief. Yet when the flowers were abloom in the spring of 1794, Abraham returned on horseback, and Jane rode behind him into Pennsylvania. The next year the couple returned to Daugherty’s, and made their home on the same ridge, ever since known as Elliott’s ridge.
Abraham, and Jane Daugherty Elliott had eleven children;
William married Susan Jeffers
Mary married Jacob Crane
Elizabeth married Samuel Jeffers
Rebecca remained single
John (b.1801) married Elizabeth Meredith
Jane (1806-1886) married Calvin Crane
Sarah married 1 John S. Graham, 2 Jacob Crane
Drusilla married Robert Forman
Susan married Abraham Jeffers
Rachel married Henry Cress
Margary married Jonathan Forman
The descendants of the boys William, and John as well as the allied families of Crane, Jeffers, Forman, Graham, and Cress (Criss) are numerous in Preston County. A journal Obituary of 1889 noted the death of Mrs. Rachel Crane, widow of Col. William B. Crane, and daughter of William, and Sarah (Susan) Elliott Crane at the age of 60. Among her survivors was her brother Dr. Felix Elliott, and three sisters all widows; Mrs. Jeane Hold of Pa., Mrs. Mary Howell of Monongahilia County, and Mrs. Susan Osborn of Taylor County. She also left four children ; S.F. Crane, C.C. Crane (then Mayor of Terre Alta), Mrs. S.F. Riley, and Miss. Jeanie Crane.
Dr. Felix Elliott was for many years a prominent doctor, and preacher of the Baptist Church in Preston, and also conducted a store in Kingwood which he sometimes used as a site for quick marriages. His son Felix Elliott Jr. was a banker in Kingwood for many years. Dr. Elliott’s wife was Mary Startzman of Aurora, and sister of Henry Startzman , long time County clerk. Dr. Felix, and Mary had 10 children, only 5 of whom grew to be adults.
Flora married D.C. Huges(Hughs?) of Buckhannon
Lilly married a Coffman
Edward S. died after he graduated law school
Emma married a Werner of Ohio
Felix was appointed Kingwood Postmaster when he was 21. He married Florence D. Vickery, daughter of Charles E., and Gregg P. (Fairfax) Vickery, and like his father, was a banker well remembered by many people in Kingwood. His children; Mrs. Kathleen ?, Col. Hanst, and Felix Jr. have moved from Preston. The children of the girls who married into other families will probably turn up in other family stories as their turns come.
Isaac Elliott, son of John the younger son of Abraham married Rachel Ervin, daughter of Jacob, thus allieing the Elliott family to another important clan, and their son Thomas W. Elliott married Flora Jane King. Their 10 children married into the following families; Maust, Durfense, Brand, Crane, Foley, and Thompson.
The Elliott’s have been prominent, and successful in their business adventures, and many of the descendants of the original Abraham have helped to populate the West. Many Prestonians now searching out their ancestry will find the name Elliott somewhere back there. Just remember that counting from the year of your birth back 150 years you will probably find a total of 256 different family names, provided the ancestors took advantage of each marriage to affiliate with a different clan name.
Among the most prominent of the descendants of Abraham Elliott now residing in Kingwood ( this was written in the 60’s) is Bill Foley, particularly outstanding, like his father before him in the banking industry.
A journal Obituary of 1913 noted the death of Isaac Elliott at the age of 89 at the home of his daughter Mrs. E.M. Heermans (Florence). His six sons living at the time included ; Thomas, John, Edward, Guy, Harvey, Gilbert, and his daughters Mrs. Heerman, and Mrs. Olive McKnight. He was the last survivor of a large family, his brothers were Capt. William, John Daugherty, and Samuel all of whom were in the Union Army. Sisters include Rebecca Bailey, Nancy Forquer, and Minerva Bailey. Another brother died while in the Union Army.
Presumed to be Isaac Elliott’s brother;

Albright Baptist Church(August 17,1954)
Especial interest was felt in the recent renovation of the Baptist church, which consisted of a new floor for the auditorium, and entrance halls, and cleaning an polishing the pews. This work was done chiefly by the young men of the church who donated the work, and materials. This church is near 100yrs. Old, and was built in a large part by members of the Elliott family, who hauled the timbers, and lumber, and did the construction work. The actual building is held in special veneration by the present members of the family. The church was built in a groove of fine oak trees, and when completed it was not possible to build a belfry although they already had bought the bell, so a center of one of the oak trees that stood closest to the door of the church was sawed out, and a timber placed between two branches of the tree, and the bell was hung on the timbers with a rope attached. In this way the bell was rung until the time came when the church was able to build a belfry, and the bell has continued to ring for the call to worship ever since. It is a remarkable fact that the bell tree still stands beside the door, although all the other trees in the grove have been removed.
PS I remember this church as a young man where we had the Elliott family reunions. Sadly the church building, and nearly all of the town of Albright was washed away in a flood that occurred on Nov. 5, 1985. The church has been rebuilt as has some of the town homes. Bill Elliott Feb. 9, 2002
Another Account In Our Genealogy
The Elliott family now to be considered are from England. The first members settled at a point of the James River, Virginia where the family became quite prominent. Three brothers Abraham, William, and Ned (Edward) left there the later part of the 18th century, and settled in Fayette County, Pennsylvania , and the village of Elliottsville was named for them. Abraham was a bachelor, Ned went to Kentucky, and William reared a family of at least 4 sons, Thomas, and Abraham being the eldest, and these two sons settled in Preston County, Virginia (now West Virginia).
In 1793, Abraham son of William, then age about 20yrs old, walked to Morgantown through the wilderness, and remained a few days at the home of John Daugherty, who lived on what is now the J. C. Crane farm, east of Albrightsville (now Albright) Preston County. The following spring (1794) Abraham returned to the home of John Daugherty, and married his daughter Jane, taking her back to Pa. with him on his horse. They resided in Fayette County Pa. about one year, then came back to Preston County, Virginia settling on Elliott’s ridge. Here they reared 11 children. Jane Daugherty Elliott died after which Abraham Elliott married a Mrs. Rebecca DeWitt. Abraham Elliott died aged 72 in 1845.

He was a farmer by occupation. He was married Nov. 24, 1824 by Rev. Samuel Morrison to Elizabeth Meredith born Aug. 4, 1802. Elizabeth was the daughter of Peter, and Elizabeth (Broadway) Meredith. Peter was born about 1757/1760. He was the son of Job, and Lydia Meredith III, born about 1733 in Petersburg, Delaware. Job was the son of Job Meredith II, the son of Job the first that came from Wales to Pennypack (outside Philadelphia, Pa.) then moved to what later became Petersburg, De. Back to Peter Meredith, father of Elizabeth, this family went from Kent County, De. To Preston County, Va. about 1800. I think he returned to Delaware before he went on to Ohio. Notes for Henry Cress by Janice Cale Sisler, Preston County Historian, May 1995;
Henry Cress tombstone indicating his death as Aug. 7, 1859 is located in an old cemetery at St. Joe, Albright W.Va. across the Cheat River from the Power Plant. That information is from a personal visit in which we listed all the tombstones we could find. The cemetery was in woeful condition even before the devastating flood of 1985. I’m not sure the stone still stands.
We went to St. Joe again Saturday to see if Henry’s stone had survived. It did, but it was unreadable as it stood. We applied some soil from near the base of the stone, than rubbed it off, and we were able to get the dates as well as the words. This adds some confusion. The marker says Henry died Aug. 7, 1847 and the bottom lines say that his age was 37 years. In between it says, “Husband of Rachel Cress born April 13, 1831”. If Henry was born in 1831, he would have been 16 when he died, and unlikely to have fathered 3 children in the 1840’s. 1831 is not Rachel’s birth date either. By the census she was born about 1813. (I believe April 13, 1831 is a misprint of Rachel’s birth date of April 13, 1813/ Bill Elliott 3/14/2002)

W.Va. town praises flood ‘miracle’
Albright, W.Va. (AP)- Troy Titchnell wasn’t one to believe in miracles before last years devastating floods, but as he putters around his nearly completed church he enjoys telling of at least one.
It’s a story the 77 year old has recounted numerous times since Nov. 5, 1985, when the Albright Baptist Church- along with much of the rest of town- was reduced to rubble by the raging Cheat River.
The miracle is the black, leather bound Bible that lies open in front of the pulpit in the newly built church. It has become a symbol of hope to the residents of this tiny river village nestled in the north-central West Virginia hills.
“It’s been talked about a good bit” said Mr. Titchnell, a trustee, and member of the Albright congregation since 1936.
Albright was among the hardest hit communities in the floods, which killed 49 people, and left more than 5,000 homeless across eastern West Virginia. Officials documented at least $550 million damage from the worst natural disaster in state history.
It was about 2 weeks later, with Albright in ruins around them, that Mr. Titchnell, and another church trustee found the Bible.
The church, built in 1857, was torn off it’s foundation. Half of the structure had collapsed, and the rest was buckled. The steeple lay on the ground nearby. The church organ was destroyed.
The pews had been ripped from the floor, and carried through the windows by the raging torrents of water. Some were wedged in doors, and were salvaged. Many others were never found.
“Several feet of mud, and debris caked the floors. Everything inside the teetering structure seemed to be gone, when Mr. Titchnell spotted the book.
It had stayed on the table. The table floated up, and it stayed up there, and when the water came down it came down too” he recalled. “ It was damp, but it didn’t get any mud on it.
“Seems like it was a miracle. It would never happen unless it was a miracle,” he said.
Mr. Titchnell says that the Old Testament was open to Haggai, Chapter 2, and that it will be kept open to that page between services.
It reads: “The glory of this later house shall be greater than of the former, saith the Lord of Hosts: and in this place will I give peace.”
Since the flood, some residents say, a series of other small miracles have occurred.
More than $82,000 was donated to rebuild the little church, which had no flood insurance. People from Albright, and surrounding communities volunteered countless hours of labor.
“ It’s a little bit bigger, and it’s better,” Mr. Titchnell said proudly, gesturing toward a new organ, and new pews. For Mr. Titchnell, resurrecting the church was piticularly meaningful, because it was there that his grandfather, and four great uncles met more than a hundred years ago to set off for the Civil War on the side of the Union.
More important, the new church has brought a few people back. More than half of the 700 residents who lived along the Cheat River fled when their properties were destroyed. Most had no insurance, and have not returned.
“The church has a lot to do with bringing people back,” said Freda Hall, 53, who lives a block away. “We’re slowly getting back to normal, and it’s beginning to look like Albright again except a little nicer.”
The Halls fled Albright after the floods but, unlike most of their neighbors, returned four months later. Their home several hundred yards from the river miraculously remained standing while those on either side were swept away.
Mrs. Hall, and her husband, David, have been attending the Baptist church while their own Methodist Church across the street is being rebuilt. Donations from as far away as California have made the rebuilding possible, she says.
In the meantime, the Halls don’t mind joining their Baptist neighbors.
“ It’s so nice, the new pews, and ceiling fans, and organ,” Mrs. Hall said. “And we thank God for all of the miracles, including our own.”
While other communities across the state revived with the help of government money, Albright wallowed in the mud for months, a victim of neglect, and red tape that delayed loans, and other assistance.
Until a few months ago, streets were filled with flood debris.
