SKETCHES OF THE PIONEER FAMILIES OF PRESTON COUNTY

During 1907-1908 a series of genealogies and articles regarding Preston Co were published in The Preston County Journal. The purpose of this work was to correct errors and omissions in Wiley's 1882 history of the county and to provide updated information. This series served as a preliminary for Morton's 1914 history of the county. Unfortunately, with the exception of the Matlick , Spurgeon and Trembly families, this short-lived series didn't progress alphabetically past the Gribble family. A chronological list of the articles and pioneer sketches follows and this is followed by an alphabetical listing of the families covered in the articles.

PRESTON NAMES OF NOTE

During the early 1970's, R Doyne Halbritter, President of the Preston County Historical Society, and guest columnists, including Janice Sisler, wrote a column for the Preston County Journal entitled "Preston Names of Note." As best as I can determine, this series began with the 5-13-1971 issue of the Journal with the Albright family. There were no articles prior to this date in 1971. Nor was an announcement found in 1971 that this series was beginning. The columns seems to have ended with the Sep 5, 1974 issue of the Journal with the Brite (Bryte) family. No articles were found in 1975 and up until the time of Doyne's death which occurred on Jan 30, 1976. I do not know if the series was resurrected later as I did not check past this date. The families covered and the issues of The Preston County Journal in which they appear are as follows.

This compilation was made for my own use and may not be without error but I hope it will benefit other Preston Co researchers. Please direct any questions regarding it through this forum rather than contacting me privately. Thank you.

Due to the loss of my hard drive following a lightning strike, setting up my computer again from scratch on the new hard drive and reconstructing lost files, I am unable to do lookups or research for anyone at this time. Sorry.
