Hewitt's of Terra Alta - Preston County
Posted by: John Hewitt Date: May 28, 2001 at 16:03:31
  of 1448

I'm looking for more information pretaining to my ancestors that lived in Terra Alta form 1842-1903, or maybe longer. John Hewitt and sons William D, and Elisha T, all fought for the Union. William died at home on Furlough. Elisha died at New Creek of Typhoid fever while encamped there. His mother(Catherine), brought him home for burial in July 1863. My question is where might they be buried. John Hewitt lived until 1900, not sure where he is buried either. I know they had a small farm in Terra Alta somewhere, and their home burned sometime around 1891. Whether they rebuilt or not I do not know. William and John were both in the W/Va 6th Cavalry company "E" and Elisha was the first to join but was in the 14th W/Va Infantry company B. Would anyone else there be able to help me with more information? I am most intrested to find out if someone knows the whereabouts of their old farm, or possibly the Graves of this Hewitt family. One clue I do have is; they were Neighbors with Hiram Dodge, if that is any help. - Thanks Please let me know. -JH
