Ron

The most compelling evidence I have to show that Valentine and Ruth (FLEMING) KING were not the parents of William H. King is the census records. Valentine died prior to 1850, so I looked for Ruth. I found her on the 1850 and 1880 census records living in Monroe County, OH. On both listings, she is with her sons, including one named "William." Meanwhile, back in Preston County, VA(WV), we have our William KING listed with his family (in 1850, with his mother, Elisabeth; and in 1880, with his wife and children). Therefore, even though Valentine and Ruth did have a son named William, it is a different William KING than the one from Preston County, WV.

In addition, William's marriage record for 8 Jan 1856 (found in Roy Lockhart's compilation) lists his parents as John & Elisabeth KING.

At the Preston County Courthouse, I found a death record listing for John KING on 30 Aug 1848 -- which explains why Elisabeth is found as a widow in 1850 and beyond.

Unfortunately, I do not know Elisabeth's maiden name. You suggest it may be SHAW based on a marriage record of 1811. That is about when they would have been married (based on known children's birth years), but I simply do not know. William's Bible is silent on the parent's names. Since Monongalia County in 1811 incorporated the area now known as Preston County, it is very probable that this is the correct marriage record for this John. Can you send me a copy of that record? I greatly appreciate it.

Let me know if I was not clear or left a hole you were hoping to fill. Perhaps I have some more that can help. Thank you.

Scott
