Thanks for your response. The James and Julia Sturgis you found in the census are my ancestors, but since I posted this message, I've found additional information that suggests that their daughter Martha left Preston County before she married Hugh Convery. So my current working assumption is that he was never in Preston County and they met somewhere else, probably in Wheeling or Pittsburgh. But thanks anyway.
