I have the following concerning Smith & Hand (they are not my line though I am searching Smith's and happened upon this information).

JOHN SMITH WILL
Wife Catherine (m. CATHERINE HAND, 5 Oct 1802, Monroe)
Her 3 children: CHRISTOPHER, CHARLES, MARGARET
My 5 children: SAMUEL, JAMES, GEORGE, WILLIAM, JOSEPH
(where WB = Will Book)
Son CHRISTIAN (HAND) SMITH m. POLLY HAND, 1827. Christian & Mary sold land bequeathed by step-father JOHN SMITH DB 1-160, Monroe Co., DFB 1-680, 1830: 1831
(where DB = Deed Book; DFB = Deed Filing Book
With this information you should be able to obtain copies of his will as well as copies of the deeds mentioned.
From this information we can conclude that Catherine Hand was a widow (or an very promiscuous woman of the day to have 3 children out of wedlock) and that HAND may have been her married name.
