Robert,

Do you have any idea when your grandfather was born?

I used www.familysearch.org to search for Charles O'Dell born in West Virginia between 1915 and 1925 (my assumptions for the sake of the search were his birth state, and the birth years seemed appropriate for someone who sereved in WWII). Using those search parameters, I came up with about 4 different Charles O'Dells (there were more hits, but some were duplicates).

The most likely candidate is Charles E. Odell, who appeared in the 1920 census of Kanawha county, West Virginia with his parents and siblings. (You said you grandfather lived in Charleston, West Virginia. Charleston is in Kanawha county).
Household Gender Age Birthplace
SELF John N Odell M 47y West Virginia
WIFE Eva Odell F 47y West Virginia
SON John L Odell M 22y West Virginia
DAU Gracie Odell F 18y West Virginia
SON William O Odell M 13y West Virginia
SON James H Odell M 10y West Virginia
DAU Ida J Odell F 8y West Virginia
SON Charles E Odell M 5y7m West Virginia
The 1920 census record is here:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MN2T-Q18

The family did not appear in the 1930 census. The 1940 census was released last month, but it has not yet been indexed for West Virginia, so is not yet searchable. It is possible that it will give additional information.

You can also perform the same search that I did at www.familysearch.org. It is a free online genealogical resource that has indexed millions of censuses, birth records, marriage records, death records, etc. world-wide. You may decide that one of the other Charles O'Dell(or Odell) is the one you are looking for.
