The William and Sarah Elizabeth Ferry TURNER family probably arrived in the US in the late 1840s from England and settled in Marshall Co., VA (now WV). Josiah Turner (1823-1886), the eldest son of William and Sarah married Elizabeth Marsh before 1850 and they are listed together in the 1850 census for Marshall Co. Elizabeth Marsh was born, by most accounts, in 1832 which suggests that she may have been 17 or 18 when she married Josiah.
Family legend has it that Josiah and Elizabeth married on shipboard while crossing the Atlantic. IF this is the case, we do not know who Elizabeth’s parents where, only that her gravestone says she was born in 1832. In the 1850 census, Elizabeth is listed as having been born in England.
But an alternate view suggests that Elizabeth was born in VA, the daughter of Abraham and Elizabeth Baird MARSH who were married in Ohio Co., VA in 1824. In the various censuses AFTER 1850, Elizabeth is listed as having been born in VA (or in PA in one case).
But I can find no record on line of the marriage between Josiah and Elizabeth. I have looked at the Marshall Co. genealogy page and the Greene Co., PA site to no avail. Can someone suggest where I might find evidence of Josiah and Elizabeth’s marriage in the US rather than on shipboard coming across the Atlantic.
Willing to share information on the TURNER family.
