I am seeking to form a local chapter called a "camp" of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. Any man age 8 or older with either a direct, blood-related ancestor who served in the Union forces or the brother of a direct, blood-related ancestor who served similarly may join. It takes 10 members to form a camp.
The cost to join is a $10 application fee plus the annual dues set by the new camp, which is usually $20-$25 per year.
The applicant must provide documentation showing his rela-
tionship to a Union soldier or sailor plus proof of the soldier's service record. Proof can be National Archives records, state adjutant general's records, discharge records, 1890 Union soldiers' census, etc.
The Sons of Union Veterans was formed in 1881 and received a Congressional charter in 1954 due to the efforts of famed WWII general, Douglas MacArthur. West Virginia already has two camps formed with a third in the process.
Please contact me if you are interested.
