Have some "Wright Brother" heritage to share...
I have some old newspaper articles and a typed out letter that my mother left me.
First... My mother is Dorothy Louise Filie (Brown) (Orpin) and she was born on December 13, 1922 in Mount Airy, N.C.
Her mother, my grandmother is Lavilette D. Wright (Filie) (Anderson)who was born in Virginia. On my mother's birth certificate it says (my Grandmother) Lavilette Wright was 15 years old when she gave birth to my Mother on 12-13-22 but did not give her date of birth.
I have Mrs. Ida G. Wright's newspaper obituary which reads...
Mrs. Ida Gordon Wright, widow of Robert Henery Wright, of Roanoke, died at the home of her son, Gordon P. Wright, Youngstown, O. Surviving besides her son are five daughters: Ximena W. Saul, Roanoke: Mrs. E. P. Carr, Mount Hope, W. Va; Mrs. Cecilia Hafermann, Portsmouth, N.H.; Mrs. Lavilette W. Filie, Baltimore, and Mrs. Juanita Patterson, Youngstown; four grandchildren and one great grandchild.Burial was in Youngstown.
(The way the obituary was clipped from the newspaper... there is no date on it.) (I'm thinking it's a typo where it says my Grandmother Lavilette's middle initial is "W." ... I think it's "D." because that's what it says on my mother's birth certificate.)
I have a couple little letter's which are obviouslly written by children. One was written to:(my Grandmother) Aunt Lavilette from Buddy P. Wright Jr.The other little letter was also to "Aunt Lavilette" and signed Gordon Wright.
In my Mother's typed out letter she wrote me in 1989... She talks about her Grandmother Wright making a beautiful tablecloth and she/it won first prize and a blue ribbon at the 1936 New York World's Fair.My mother said the table cloth was passed down to her oldest daughter, Ximeana Wright Saul of Roanoke, VA.Then she says that her that in turn her Aunt Ximeana Wright passed down the blue ribbon tablecloth to my Mother's cousin Lorena Saul of Roanoke, VA.Lorena was just a year younger than my Grandmother, Lavilette Wright, she said. Lorena was my Mother's Grandmother's youngest daughter.
My mother goes on to say: Since both her mother and Lorena were both living in Baltimore, MD at the time that her cousin (Lorena) felt she was coming near the end of her life,(Lorena had helped bring my Mother up) so she decided at that time to pass this family heirloom down to my Mother knowing someday it would be passed down to me and so on through the family.
My mother closes her letter by writting...
"Lisa: Please keep this letter as part of your family history, as someday one of the children may want to trace their roots.Wilbur and Orville Wright were related through my Grandfather Robert Wright - cousins, I believe. Grandfather was born in England and Grandmother (Gordon) Wright was born in Scottland. I don't remember her first name."
I'm guessing (since typing out the obituary above) that "Ida" is her Grandmother Wright's first name.
I hope this may help in some way... I'd be very curious to know if this helps unwrap a bit of the puzzle.
My mother kept sooooo much stuff.I have other papers which I'll look through as well and will let you know what I find.
Lisa
