Shirley,
Following up on your 1880 Census listing for Ann Wright, I offer the following information:
The 1870 Census for Grayson County, Virginia, listed Churchman Wright with the following household, all born in Virginia:
Churchman Wright, age 43, miller,
Malinda Wright, age 43,
Churchwell Wright, age 23,
Samuel Wright, age 18,
Mary C. Wright, age 16,
Caroline Wright, age 14,
Emily Wright, age 12,
Elbert Wright, age 10,
Virginia Wright, age 8,
David Wright, age 6,
Martha Wright, age 4, and
Robert Wright, age 2.
The age of Malinda and the names and ages of the last 7 children make clear that this is the same family as listed in the 1880 Census under Ann Wright. The presence of Churchwell (mislisted as Churchman) Wright in the 1870 Census and his absence in the 1880 Census indicates that he probably died between 1870 and 1880.However, I could find no on-line death record for him and so you will need to contact Grayson County to see if they have such a death record. That record may list his parents.
The 1860 Census for Grayson County, Virginia, listed Churchwell Wright with the following household, all born in Virginia:
Churchwell Wright, age 36, miller,
Malinda A. Wright, age 34,
William R. Wright, age 14,
Churchwell Wright, age 12,
Samuel F. Wright, age 9,
Mary C. Wright, age 7,
Sarah C. Wright, age 5,
Emily F. Wright, age 3, and
Elbert F. Wright, age 4/12.
The names and ages of the husband and wife and the names and ages of the last 6 children make clear that this is thesame household as in the 1870 Census.
The 1850 Census for Grayson County, Virginia, listed Churchwell Wright with the following household, all born in Virginia:
Churchwell Wright, age 26, carpenter,
Malinda Wright, age 24,
Richard Wright, age 5, and
Churchwell Wright, age 3.
This is clearly the same household as in the 1860 Census and indicates that the son William R. Wright was William Richard Wright.
The marriage record of Churchwell Wright and Malinda Ann Phipps was dated on September 25, 1848, in Grayson County, Virginia. This record indicates that the Malinda A. Wright of the census records was Malinda Ann and that the Ann Wright of the 1880 Census for Grayson County was the same person. However, this date of marriage is too late for Malinda Ann to have been the mother of the first two children William Richard Wright and Churchwell Wright.
There is a second marriage record for Churchwell Wright and that was to Charlotte Atkins on January 2, 1845, in Grayson County, Virginia.Charlotte would have been the mother of the first two children and possibly died giving birth to Churchwell.
There is a WorldConnect Posting by D. A. Gammon for Churchwell Wright which lists him as Churchwell Oglesby Wright, Sr.That listing identifies his parents as James Wright and Martha Patsy and that James Wright was born in 1781 in Grayson County, Virginia. However, Grayson County was not formed until 1792, so the place of birth is incorrect. The posting also stated that James Wright and his wife Martha Patsy (_____) Wright were buried in the Atkins Memorial Church Cemetery. This indicates that there may be a probate administration in Grayson County which may list the children of James and Martha Patsy Wright.
The posting also stated that Churchwell Wright was born on July 13, 1824, in Grayson County, Virginia, married first Charlotte Atkins, married second Malinda Ann Phipps, and died before 1910 in Grayson County, Virginia.
Regretfully, no sources are given in this WorldConnect posting, so you will want to contact D. A. Gammon at [email protected] to pursue this further.
Best wishes,
