Tom,
This is not a complete answer to your question, but hopefully will be of some help.
In her email dated September 5, 2001, Judy Weber ([email protected]) stated that the John B. Wright who married Anna Stanfield in 1831 was 1868/69 (year of death) John B. Wright of Vermilion County, Illinois, (place of death) and that he was born on December 12, 1785, in Frederick County, Virginia, married first Elizabeth Stevens or Stephens on January 14, 1804, in Frederick County, Virginia, moved to Illinois in 1830, married second Anna Stanfield on February 24, 1831, in Vermilion County, Illinois, died on November 30, 1868 or 1869, and was buried in the Old Bodkin Cemetery, Vermilion County, Illinois.
The marriage bond for John Wright and Elizabeth Stephens was dated on January 13, 1807, at Frederick County, Virginia, and provided as follows:
"Know all men by these presents, That we John Wright Junr. and Peter Stephens are held and firmly bound unto Wm H. Cabbell Esq Governor of Virginia, in the just and full sum of one hundred and fifty dollars, to which payment well and truly to be made, to the said Governor or his successors, we bind ourselves, and each of our heirs, executors and administrators, jointly and severally, firmly by these presents.Sealed with our seals, and dated this 13th day of January 1807
The Condition of the above Obligation is such, that whereas there is a Marriage shortly intended to be solemnized between the above bound John Wright Junr & Elizabeth Stephens daughter of the above bound Peter Stephens of Frederick County now if there be no lawful cause to obstruct the said Marriage, then the above Obligation to be void, otherwise to remain in full force and virtue.
Signed sealed and delivered ) John Wright
in the presence of ) Peter Stephens
James Gamble"
The John Wright, Jr., may have been used in the sense of "son of John Wright, Sr." or in the sense of "younger", so further research will be required to determine whether this John B. Wright's father was John Wright.
However, there was also a marriage bond for Phebe Wright, daughter of John Wright of Frederick County, and George Boncutter dated December 31, 1806, in Frederick County and I suspect this Phebe would be John B. Wright's sister.
There was also a marriage bond for Jane Wright, daughter of Elizabeth Wright widow of John Wright, and Abraham Forsyth dated June 17, 1819, in Frederick County, Virginia, which may indicate that John Wright, the possible father of John B. Wright, was married to Elizabeth (_____) Wright and died before June 17, 1819.
There was also a marriage bond for William Wright and Maria Churchwill dated December 31, 1825, in Frederick County with John Wright as surety. If John B. Wright did not move to Vermilion County, Illinois, until 1830, he might have been the surety on this bond.
If these marriage records are all for the same family, then they would provide four children of John Wright, Sr., and Elizabeth (_____) Wright.
If the possible father John Wright, Sr., had died by June 17, 1819, then his family may be identified from Frederick County, Virginia, Deed 41/403 dated June 25, 1819, by which the heirs of John Wright conveyed real property to James Tanquary.Another deed from John Wright's heirs was Deed 46/195 dated September 4, 1822, to Peter Keading.I have not examined these deeds, but if the names of the heirs match the marriage record names, then you will have an identification of the family. Finally, there is Deed 43/11 dated August 21, 1820, by which John Wright & ux executed a deed of trust to Frederick Nadenbousch. If the "ux" in this deed was Elizabeth, then you would probably be able to track the legal description back to the acquisition document.
There are two sets of probate records in Frederick County which might relate to your John B. Wright. They are the following:
010 300 1818 John Wright Will
010 327 1818 John Wright Inventory
011 097 1818 John Wright Account
014 241 1818 John Wright Account
010 408 1819 Jonathan Wright Will
010 458 1819 Jonathan Wright Inventory
012 160 1819 Jonathan Wright Account
You will almost certainly want to check both sets of documents to see whether either will names John B. Wright as a son or names the other possible children listed above.
Finally, there is a WorldConnect posting dated 9/26/2006 by Roger Lander which stated that John B. Wright's middle name was Barrett, but no source was given for this.
Best wishes,
