William Wright & Mary Bledsoe of Orange Co., VA

This is my file on William Wright b.c. 1740, of Orange County Virginia who married Mary Bledsoe. This is a compilation of the work of many researchers whom I've tried to name where appropriate. I'm sure I've made many errors and would appreciate hearing from anyone who has better information. My apologies especially to anyone who has already corrected me and whose changes I failed to make! I have sometimes gotten behind on working on the family tree and many times have simply gotten confused. Please contact me again.

I'm aware that many people consider William to have been born before 1740, but I doubt that he was that much older than his siblings and wife. His son George Bledsoe is also sometimes said to have been born much earlier than available records and the ages of his children would seem to indicate. Some also say that William had children other than the ones he so carefully listed in his will, but I haven't seen any good evidence for any of them so far.

William Wright

Born: c. 1740 in St. David Parish, King William County, VA.

Religion: Probably Anglican, which was the established church in Virginia before the Revolution.

Married 1st: c. 1765-70, in St. Thomas Parish, Orange County, VA, to Mary Bledsoe, daughter of George and Lucy Bledsoe.

Married 2nd: 11 Aug 1787, Orange Co, VA, to Rachel Perry, dau. of Pierce & Mary Perry

Died: bet. 21 Jul 1832 (will written) and 25 Mar 1833 (will probated), in St. Thomas Parish, Orange Co., VA

Father:       John Wright, Sr. born c.1710-15

Mother:       Frances _______ born c.1715-20

Occupation: Tobacco planter, farmer, Capt in Orange Co., VA militia during Revolution.

Land and tax records show that William was a fairly affluent tobacco planter (using slave labor), at least in the years before the Revolution. Virginia’s economy began to stagnate in the 1770’s, however, as the land became exhausted by continuous tobacco planting. It became harder to make a fortune through tobacco, and most planters started to experiment with other crops. Whatever William farmed after the Revolution, he remained prosperous enough to leave land, money, and slaves to his large family of children upon his death in 1823.

Mary Bledsoe

Born: c. 1745, Virginia
Religion: Probably Anglican.

Died: by Aug 1787, Orange Co., VA (when husband remarried)

Father:       George Bledsoe, Sr. born c.1710, son of Capt William & Elizabeth Bledsoe of Spotsylvania (Orange) County

Mother:       Lucy _______ born c.1725

Occupation: Plantation mistress.

Children of William Wright & Mary Bledsoe

1. Wright, Nancy b.c.1770, St. Thomas Parish, Orange Co., VA; m.       28 Mar 1791, Orange Co., VA, to George Rhoades, bro. of Richard; d. by Jul 1832 (listed as deceased in father’s will)

2. Wright, George Bledsoe b.c. 1770, St. Thomas Parish, Orange Co., VA [dates of 20 Oct 1751, 20 Oct 1759, c. 1770 have been given for him. The ages of his siblings and children indicate the later date is much more probable]; m. 5 Jan 1792, St. Thomas Parish, Orange Co., VA, to Sarah Beasely, daughter of James & Ann (Reynolds) Beasely.
(was there a 1st marriage to Della Raglan?); d.       24 Oct 1835, Hatton, Shelby Co., KY. Bledsoe was named for his maternal grandfather. Was named executor of will and called ‘friend’ by Thomas Johnson in 21 Jun 1800 will by Thomas Johnson, along with Johnson’s son, John Johnson. He appraised the estate.

[from Banks McLaurin's book, Volume II, on the descendants of William Bledsoe]. "Bledsoe Wright, married his second wife before coming to KY. He moved to Fayette Co., and bought a farm 3/4 miles from Lexington."

Various children who have been listed for him: 1) Middleton b.c. 1791; 2) Benjamin b.c. 1794; 3) Milton b.c. 1797; 4) Belinda b.c. 1799; 5) Mary R. b. 30 Dec 1799; 5) Edwin b.c. 1803; 6) Raglan b.c. 1805; 7) Della b.c. 1807; 8) Evans b.c. 1809; 9) Larkin b.c. 1812; 10) Byron b. 8 Aug 1815; 11) Adelia b. Jun 1816; 12) Fendal b.c. 1817; 13) Crittenden b. 20 Jun 1820.

3. Wright, Lucy b.c. 1773, St. Thomas Parish, Orange Co., VA; m.       9 Feb 1793, Orange Co., VA, to Richard Rhoades, brother of George; d. By Jul 1832 (listed as deceased in father’s will). Headstone still stands in Rhoades Cemetery.

* 4. Wright, Larkin b.c. 1774, St. Thomas Parish, Orange Co., VA; m. 1st 21 Nov 1799, Orange Co., VA, to Lucy James
2nd 21 Oct 1813, Madison Co., VA, to Nancy Sebree, daughter of John and Mildred (Johnson) Sebree ( I think she was the daughter of John and Mildred. I have only circumstantial evidence, but would be glad to discuss with anyone interested in the Sebrees); d. 1846-50, Monroe Co., MO. Moved to Monroe Co., MO in 1837 with several of younger children. For children, see separate file.

5. Wright, John b.c. 1776, St. Thomas Parish, Orange Co., VA; m. 4 Aug 1801, Orange Co., VA, to Caty Faulconer, daughter of John Faulconer. For a long time I thought this was the John Wright who married Elizabeth Sebree (sister of Nancy Sebree who married Larkin Wright) and died in the mid 1820s after which his widow and children went to Missouri. However, I now think the John who married Sebree was more likely a cousin. John and Elizabeth (Sebree) Wright were the parents of the famous lawyer and pre-Civil War St. Louis politician Uriel Wright.

6. Wright, Frances b.c. 1780, St. Thomas Parish, Orange Co., VA; m. 22 Jan 1800, Orange Co., VA, to John Sleet, prob. son of James Sleet.

* The three girls were listed in order Frances, Nancy, & Lucy in their father’s will. If that was their actual birth order, then Frances was born c.1771, Nancy c.1773, and Lucy c.1780. Instead, I subtracted 20 years from their marriage dates to estimate their birth years. For the sons, I kept them in the order listed in the will and then subtracted 25 years from their marriage dates (except for George Bledsoe Wright).

Children of William Wright and Rachel Perry

7. Wright, Mary b.c.1796, St. Thomas Parish, Orange Co., VA; m. 2 Sep 1816, Orange Co., VA, to William A. Moore; d. after 1833 (listed as living in father’s will).

8. Wright, Elizabeth b.c. 1788, St. Thomas Parish, Orange Co., VA; m. 26 Dec 1808, St. Thomas Parish, Orange Co., VA, to Thomas Thornton; d.       after 1833 (listed as living in father’s will). Husband died Jan 1831. At least one daughter, Nancy b.c. 1814.

9. Wright, Jane b.c. 1806, St. Thomas Parish, Orange Co., VA; m. 9 Mar 1826, Orange Co., VA, to 1st cousin Larkin Herndon, son of John and Elizabeth (Wright) Herndon; d.after 1833 (listed as living in father’s will). A Robert Wright was paid in her right from father William’s will. An illegitimate child from before her marriage?

10. Wright, Elender or Eleanor       b.c. 1793, St. Thomas Parish, Orange Co., VA; m. 18 Jul 1813, St. Thomas Parish, Orange Co., VA, to Andrew Newman; d. after 1833 (listed as living in father’s will). Name given as Elender in father’s will, but is Eleanor on marriage bond.

11. Wright, Susannah b.c. 1793, St. Thomas Parish, Orange Co., VA; m. 13 Sep 1813 to Gorah Waugh, son of George Lee and Elizabeth (Boston) Waugh; d. By 1833 (listed as deceased in father’s will). Seems to have moved to KY. Children according to Dean Johnston: 1) Charles Stuart; 2) Jane Frances; 3) William; 4) George Lee; 5) Gorie Robert; 6) Richard; 7) John Alexander b. 1814 m. Elizabeth Ellen Wright in KY c. 1839.

12. Wright, Leandy b.c. 1808, St. Thomas Parish, Orange Co., VA; m.c. 1828, Orange Co., VA, to Moses Bledsoe, son of Moses and Anne (Perry) Bledsoe; d. 1889, VA.

13. Wright, William Madison b.       15 May 1811, St. Thomas Parish, Orange Co., VA; m. 22 Sep 1840, Orange Co., VA, to Lucy Ann Sleet (maybe daughter of John & Frances (Wright) Sleet married 22 Jan 1800 in St. Thomas Parish, Orange Co., VA?); d. After 1833 in Henry Co., MO. Buried in the Good Hope Cemetery, near Cole.

14. Wright, Alexander P. b. 18 Feb 1788, Orange Co., VA; m. 1st? 10 Feb 1808, Orange Co., VA to Betsy Jones?
2nd to Temperance __________; d. 9 Aug 1872, Henry Co., MO. Buried in the Good Hope Cemetery, near Cole. Aged 84Y 5M 21D.       Was on the 1810 census in ? Co., VA.

15. Wright, Samuel b.c. 1810, Orange Co., VA;        m. 21 Jan 1834, Orange Co., VA to Susan Hughes. I think he went to Henry Co., MO with brothers William M. & Alexander P., as father in will commissions executor William M. to personally deliver Alexander’s and Samuel’s inheritance (in money).

16. Wright, Malinda b.c. 1806, Orange Co., VA; m. 25 Dec 1826, Orange Co., VA, to Daniel Thornton.

Slaves:
William Wright was a slave owner. He had slaves listed on the 1782 & 1785 tax rolls, as well as the 1810 census. He bequeathed slaves to his children in his will in 1832.

Land deeds:

* New Virginian counties were continually formed during the 18th century. It’s important to keep in mind that just because a person’s county changed, it doesn’t mean he moved (or went very far, if he did move).
Spotsylvania County was formed out of a piece of King William County in 1702.
Orange County, Virgina, was formed out of a piece of Spotsylvania County in 1734.
Culpepper County was formed out of a piece of Orange County in 1749.
Madison County was formed out of a piece of Culpepper in 1793.

In 1752, William’s father John Wright (of King William County) bought land in Orange County. The same day, a William Wright (of Dunmore County) bought adjoining land from the same owner. Our William would have been a minor, so perhaps his father John Wright b.c.1715 had a brother William who bought land in Orange County but either never moved there or died before 1782? However, there are no other records of another William and this deed was “examined and delivered to William Wright” in 1774 along with another deed given by John & Frances Wright to William in 1765 in which they identify William as their son. This would seem to make them too old to be the parents of their younger children whom they identify in deeds granted in 1777. Maybe John Wright b.c.1715 acquired the land bought next to his by a brother named William in 1752 to give to his eldest son, our William b.c.1740.

1774 - Our William did buy more adjoining land in 1774, when the other two deeds were given to him. This land adjoined or was very near the Bledsoe family’s property. [See attachments]

The American Revolution:

According to ‘Patriots of the Upcountry: Orange County, Virginia in the Revolution,’ by William H. B. Thomas, Orange County Bicentennial Commision, Orange, VA, 1976, our William Wright (along with his brother John and brother-in-law George Bledsoe, Sr.) signed several petitions to the General Assembly and House of Delegates of the Commonwealth of Virgina. [See attachments.]

In same book is mentioned and pictured Spring Hill, William’s childhood home, on the land which his father John bought in 1752 (identifiable by the description of boundaries in the deed). A raiding party, possibly of some of Banastre Tarleton’s troopers, came within a mile of the house. As of 1976, the Wright family still lived there. [See attachment.]

Pg 92 of same book mentions William’s and his brother John’s ranks in the Orange County milita during the revolution:

William Wright, pg 92., on Orange County Militia roster as 1st Lt.
John Wright, pg 92., is an ensign

In ‘Historical Register of Virginians in the Revolution,’ by Gwathney, are listed:

William Wright was appointed ensign in Capt Conway’s Company and took oath Aug 28, 1777. Oath as 1st Lt in Capt Daniel’s Company on March 24, 1780.

John Wright was promoted from Ensign to Capt in Stubblefield’s Company on July 26, 1781.

John Herndon, William’s future son-in-law’s father, was appointed ensign in the Orange County militia the same day that William Wright was promoted from ensign to First Lieutenant. Appointed 24 Mar 1780; took oath 26 May 1780.

"Patriots of the Upcountry - Orange Co., Virginia in the Revolution" by William H. B. Thomas, 1976 lists several claims William made against the government after the war was over:

Pg 106, William Wright makes claim against the government in 1782 for “385 pounds of beef which he supplied on Sept 9, 1781 and 40 pounds of bacon which he supplied on July 5, 1781 for the Shenandoah militia, and for a gun impressed for militia guarding convention prisoners in 1778 and never returned. In 1783, made a claim for 250 pounds of beef supplied.

17 Nov 1777, p. 115, William is listed as signing a petition on the difficulties of meeting musters.
