I think most of the Wrathers used to spell their name Rather and the spelling change arose over a family dispute. I recently read a book about Welsh rebels in the 13th century and there was a prince named Rhodri. When the English King Edward I had his name written in an official document it was spelled "Rather", so that might be how it was pronounced. I have not had time to look into this further, but my grandmother was a Wrather and she said they immigrated from Wales.
