Hi there,

Roman Wotipka and Barbara Filipp are my G-G-G-Grandparents.

I have been doing research on my father's side for some time now, but only recently started to dive into my Czech roots (Mom's side).

I have alot of pictures loaned to me by my great-grandmother, Mrs. Louis Zapletal, among them is my favorite that shows five generations of the family with GGGGGrandmother Filipp (Barbara's Mother) sitting in a shawl on a porch step with Barbara Filipp/Wotipka, Bertha Wotipka/Novak, Julia Novak/Picha and I believe she is holding her oldest son Frank Picha in her arms. (Not sure of the infant).

There is also a small photo portrait of Barbara and Roman Wotipka as well as a few distance shots of the exterior of the house they lived near Moulton, for I believe 57 years,.

There are pictures of Dostaliks and Miculkas and Trojaceks and lots of "old country" names that most folks cannot begin to spell much less pronounce. There is an old painted looking postcard of St. Joseph's Catholic Church there in Moulton, TX to my great-great aunt Julie Novak/Picha written in Czech, so I am asking my great-grandmother to decipher that one for me.

I am still sifting through it all and have been lucky enough to have my great-grandmother sit with me and begin to at least identify who is in each photo. She is getting on in years and so the memory comes and goes, but we have done quite well. I am scanning each of these in, as I must return the originals to her sometime soon. Not to mention that time and silverfish don't help the quality of photographs.

I have found a somewhat faded clipping of Roman Wotipka Sr.'s obituary and if you will indulge me, I will transcribe it below.

" Roman Wotipka, a resident of this community for more than half a century, passed away at his home near Moulton at 5:00 P.M. Sunday, November 10, after an illness of one week.

The funeral was held from the family residence Tuesday morning with services in the St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Rev. Joseph Kopp officiating. Interment took place in the Moulton Catholic Cemetery.

Six grandsons served as pallbearers: Benjamin Miculka, Roman Miculka, Edwin Wotipka, George Novak, Roman Dierschke and Engelbert Machac.

The deceased was born at Cat Spring, Texas and attained the age of 84 years, 3 months and 1 day. He was married to Miss Barbara Filipp, lived at Praha five years and removed to near Moulton, where he lived 57 years on the same place.

Surviving him are five children, Mrs. F.A. Machac of Houston, Mrs. Frank Novak of Flatonia, Sister M. Hiltrude of the Congregation of Sisters of Divine Providence of San Antonio, Mrs. Frank Miculka of Shiner, and Eddie Wotipka of Moulton; 35 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren. Three children - Roman Wotipka, Jr., Mrs. Marie Dierschke and Miss Agnes Wotipka - preceded him in death.

Mr. Wotipka was a good man and had many friends throughout this section where he lived for such a long time."

I wish I had more of the page for on the back of the clipping is an article on labor disputes with then President Roosevelt.

I hope I have been of some help to those diggin around for our Czech roots...I would love to visit with anyone who might information to share. Feel free to contact me directly at
