Diaries of Joseph & William Wortman

I have two diaries, one written by Joseph & one written by William Wortman. William is Joseph's father. Joseph stats out, he is teaching school in PA. He writes to his father about doing an overland trip to CA in 1833. His father tells him no to come home to Portersville ( I think Ohio) and he will go with him the following year 1834. They sailed from New York down the coast to Panama, walked across Panama caught another ship and came up to CA landing San Fransico. They then came up the delta to Stockton and on to the mining camps.
Does this sound framiliar to anyone? I am trying to find the Wortman family to which these two belong.
