Susannah Worth Leadbetter was my 2nd Great Grandmother and I would like to share some newly discovered information on her in hopes of confirminging her parentage,birthplace and date of birth from someone more knowledgeable on the Worth Family.
Susannah Worth Leadbetter died in Framingham, MA January 28, 1899. The 1899 Framingham Town Report and Susannah's Death Certificate show her age as 97 years, 6 months and 14 days, which would put her date of birth as approximately July 14, 1801. Previous to discovering her death information, be believed she had been born approx 1813 based on her age (68)shown on the 1881 Cumberland County Nova Scotia Census Records.
Susannah's Death Certificate lists her father as Benjamin Worth, and her mother as Bethany ----- which I am wondering if her mother was Bethany Clarke, the 2nd wife of Benjamin Worth of Mabou?
More puzzling, Susannah's place of birth was listed as Somerset, MA. I found this suspicious as both the 1881 & 1891 Cumberland County Nova Scotia Census Records and the 1900 & 1910 US Census Records show her place of birth as Nova Scotia.
I wrote to the Somerset Town Clerk requesting a copy of Susannah's Birth Certificate, and they wrote back incidating that there were no Worth's born in that town and recommended trying Swansea, MA as Somerset used to be part of Swansea.
Going on information established on Benjamin Worth arriving in Mabou in 1786 from Somerset, NJ and later marryied Bethany Clarke, I doubt that Susannah Worth was born in MA.
Susannah Worth Leadbetter was the widow of Peter A Leadbetter who died in 1875 at the age of 65 according to his stone in Palmerston Cemetery in Pugwash, Nova Scotia. If his tombstone is correct, he would have been born approximately 1810. Together Peter & Susan had 9 children: Asa, Ebenezer, Peter, Benjamin, Richard, Asa H.,James W.,Janette & Peter Earl.
Susannah Worth Leadbetter was living in Framingham, MA at the time of her death with her daughter Janette Leadbetter Fitzgerald and her son-in-law, John Fitzgerald.
John Fitzgerald was born in Harbor Grace, Newfoundland approximately June 15, 1828, and according to his Death Certificate, he was the son of Thomas Fitzgerand and Ann Nicko. John Fitzgerald died in Framingham, MA on Oct 12, 1905 at the age of 77 years, 3 months, 27 days. His obituary lists him as a retired Sea Captain.
Janette Fitzgerald died in Ashland, MA on July 1, 1913 at the age of 55 years, 1 month and 9 days, putting her date of birth at approximately May 22, 1858. Together, she and John had 7 children: Gerald, Annie, Suzie, Julia, John, jr, Thomas B., & Frank.
Susannah Worth Leadbetter, John Fitzgerald and Janette Fitzgerald are all buried in the Edgell Grove Cemetery, Framingham, MA.
If anyone tracing the Worth Family has any information to help me to prove Susannah Worth Leadbetter's parentage,birthplace and her birthdate, I'd be eternally grateful!
