Update & corrections: Henry Wornstaff/Sarah Evick
Henry Warnsturf and Sarah Evick were married 6 Jun 1792 in Pendleton County, VA (now WV). Source "Marriages of Pendleton County 1788-1853 compiled and published by Mary Harter 1978"
Henry is believed by some to be the son of an unknown Wanstuf and his wife Barbara. Sarah was the daughter of George and Eve Evick (proved by a deed dated 1 Aug 1803)
The town of Franklin, capital of Pendleton Co., was laid out on property owned by George and his brother Francis Evick defacto founders of the town.
Henry and Sarah left Pendleton County prior to 1803. The above mentioned deed dealt with sale of land inherited from Eve Evick and identifies that Henry and Sarah were living in "County of Conoway." It is apparent that the proper spelling would have been Kanawha, where Charleston, WV, isthe county seat.
Henry's name with various spellings appears on the personal
tax records of Kanawha for 1801, 1802 and 1806. (Tax records are lost for some years.)
The first records found so far of Henry Warnstaff in Ross County, Ohio, are tax lists for 1809 and 1810 in Concord Township. At some point after leaving Pendleton County, Sarah died. And at some point Henry married a second wife,
Elizabeth (named in his will). Her surname is not known and it is not Wilges, as many family trees show.
Henry and Sarah had six children, names and birthdates as follows: Henry, Jr. 1793, Daniel 1794, Susanna (Rakestraw)
1797, William, 1798, Catherine (Long), Phoebe (Turnipseed).
These children were named in Henry's will. Census records show that the children with birthdates were born in Virginia.
Just to set the record straight, Henry, Jr. married Elizabeth Wilges in 1818. Some family trees that I have not verified show they had children James 1818, William 1822, Samuel 1827, John 1830 and Nancy 1838. I did find a report showing that Henry, Jr. was on a tax list in Louisa,IA, in 1846 and that he died there in 1848 and that Elizabeth died there in 1878.
To try to keep our Henrys and Elizabeths straight, I should point out that William, son of Henry and Sarah, had a son, Henry L. 1826, who also married an Elizabeth 1834, daughter of Joseph Lease and Mary Goldsberry. This Henry died in the Civil War while serving with an Ohio Artillery unit.
(I am descended from this Henry and Elizabeth's daughter,
Caroline Warnstaff, who married Thomas Calvin Kerr.)
I have some infomation on Christian Ewig , who came from Germany to Pennsylvania and then to Pendleton County,VA around 1748 and was probably the father of the Evick brothers. If any of you know more about him or his wife, I would enjoy comparing notes. Please respond to my email address since this may not be appropriate for the Wornstaff Forum.
