Joseph Workman, son of Abraham Woertman
My wife and I are preparing a non-commercial report of their heritage for our children/grandchildren.Among the families in my wife's lineage is the Workman's.She is a descendant of the Alice Workman who is from the Issac son of Joseph Worman/Phoebe Mc___ branch.Whenever possible we try to document each line using primary sources (copies of which we insert in an appendix) or credible secondary sources.
With the considerable help of a series of articles written by Barbara Baarth for the NY Genealogy Society, where she cites numerous publications and church records, we have been able to document the lineage of Abraham Woertman who wed Annetje Smith and was born in Raritan NJ, going back to Jan Woertman who died in Amsterdam.
However, we cannot link Joseph Workman who wed Phoebe to this Abraham, and are curious as to the basis for the conclusion that he is in fact the son of Abraham Woertman and Annetje.Church records in Raritan support the fact that they had one child, Andries, but no others, although Baarth acknowledges there may have been others.
We know that the York County PA marriage records of Joseph and Phoebe, indicate that Joseph was "the son of Abraham" (thus apparently conclusively disputing that the Joseph who wed Phoebe was the son of an Issac, as believed by Anderson), we just don't know whether it is Abraham Workman or Woertman, and there is no reference to the spouse of Abraham.
We understand, but have not seen supporting documentation, from the works of Sayre and Browning, that at the time of his enlistment, Joseph stated that he was from PA, and that the Abraham that enlisted at the same time mentioned something about being from NJ. But, other than a similar enlistment surname, we don't know the relationship of these two individuals. We have read reports stating that this Abraham had re-located to PA.However, despite efforts to locate them, we have not seen any documentation supporting that claims, nor evidencing an agreement to purchase property, referenced by both sayre and Browning, nor any rent roll.We therefore don't know whether the name on those records is Abraham "Workman" or "Woertman".
We are trying to find some support for, or alternatively an understanding the basis of, the conclusion that the Abraham who wed Annetje was the father of the Joseph who wed Phoebe.
We are also interested in any material or support for the conclusion that Issac was the son of Joseph, and the heritage of my wife's Alice.
We will be happy to reimburse anyone for copies of records et, and even though outr report is non-commercial, we intend to acknowledge the sources for our reports.
Your help is appreciated. If you wish to respond privately, feel free to contact us at our email.
Thanks again.
