Reece Workman of Carbon, Kanawha, WV
Workman heads of households in Logan County 1840 were Abraham, Andrew, Isaac, James H., John (2), Joseph Sr., Joseph, Joseph Jr., Josephus, Moses (2), Obadiah, Russell, Squire T., and Thomas.Although index entries call this “Squire T.,”I suspect he was “Squire J. Workman.”
Theory:In cursive writing many people strike a horizontal tail on the “J” making it appear at quick glance as a “T.”It is therefore possible that the Squire T. Workman indexed in the 1840 Logan and 1850 Kanawha County censuses is actually “Squire J. Workman.”
Squire Workman appeared on the Logan County, (W) Virginia tax lists 1827-1833, and was listed in the 1840 Logan County Census. He purchased 124 acres on Whites Fork in 1837 from J. J. Benoist and 125 acres in 1839 from the same. He sold 234 acres on Big Creek in 1849 to James Marrs.
Newton Workman’s parents is proven by the Kanawha County 1850 Virginia Census (213-216) household of Squire J. Workman, b. about 1805 Va., and wife Nancy, b. about 1806 Va. Children listed were: Mary b. about 1833; Jasper b. about 1837; Newton b. about 1837; Marion b. about 1839; Patterson b. about 1843; Thomas b. about 1845; and Dryden b. about 1846.
Newton Workman, age 26, b. in Lawrence Co., OH, son of Joseph and N. Workman married 22 October 1857 in Cabell County, Sarah Thompson, 20, b. in Cabell County, WV, daughter of John and M. Thompson. I suspect the Lawrence County, Ohio birth place is about Sarah as Newton’s Civil War papers state he was born in Logan County, (W) Virginia. Also a later census record says Sarah was born in Ohio.
NEWTON WORKMAN was born between 1831 and 1837, in Logan County, to Squire J. and Nancy Workman. He married 22 October 1857 in Cabell County, (W) Virginia, SARAH THOMPSON who was born about 1837 to John and Matilda (Thornton) Thompson. John Thompson married 14 February 1833 in Kanawha County, (W) Virginia, Matilda Thornton.
Cabell County 1860 Virginia Census, 25 June, 640/618 WORKMAN, Newton, 26 born VA; wife, Sarah, 21, born OH. Child: Theresa, 1 f, born VA. Also in house is A. J. Thompson, age 19, day laborer, b. VA.If Reese Workman was s/o Newton and Sarah, the census is in error and “Theresa” should be “Reese.” A son, Andrew, was born about 1862.
Newton mustered into Civil War service, Co., I, 9th Reg’t of West Virginia Volunteers at Guyandotte, WV 12 May 1862. (another record says 30 April 1862.)Description says he was age 28, 6 foot high, light complexion, Blue eyes, Light hair, and by occupation was a farmer. He enlisted to serve a term of three years.Later came under Co. D, 1st West Virginia Veteran’s Infantry.
Newton died in a U. S. Army General Hospital in Parkersburg, WV, 2 November 1864.His birth date was given there as 1835, and birth place as Logan County.Apparently he was first interred in Parkersburg, but a reinterment occurred 16 December 1867 in the Grafton (Taylor Co., WV) National Cemetery, grave number 1019.Marker reads “N. Workman, W. Va.”
Sarah Workman married George Halbert 29 March 1868 in Greenup County, Kentucky. The Greenup County 1870 Kentucky Census, Precinct 1, June 2, 1870, Greenupsburg Household 356/348 showed no wife for George Halbert, but two males Reece and Andrew Workman were with the family. So Sarah was probably deceased before 1870.
George Halbert married 7 Dec 1871 Minerva J. Marion in Greenup County, Kentucky.
Greenup County, Kentucky, deaths were checked for Sarah Halbert, and none were found.
Children of Newton and Sarah (Thompson) Workman:
(1) REESE WORKMAN, b. 1859 WV per 1870 census. See below.
(2) ANDREW WORKMAN, b. 1862 WV per 1870 census. This was probably the Andrew Workman, age 19, b. VA, both parents b. VA, working on the farm of Ephraim and Susan Morgan, 1880, at Hunnewell, Greenup County, Kentucky.
REECE (REESE) WORKMAN was born about 1859 probably in Cabell County, (W) Virginia. He may have married as many as five times.
A Reese Workman married IDA GREEN 27 Apr 1882 Greenup County, Ky.
According to a Fayette County (WV) marriage, Ruce Workman married 24 April 1890 LIZZIE STAMPER. This record states that “Ruce” Workman was widowed and a son of Newton and Sarah Workman. Parents of “Lizzie” were not named. I believe the first two e’s in his name, “Reece,” were closed up making them look like a “u.”Since Ruce (Reece) was noted to be “widowed,” this would be his second marriage.
By Alex’s death record and the Boyd County 1900 Kentucky Census, Sadie (Hood) Workman was mother of Reece’s children. They must have married about 1891. By the Boyd County 1900 Kentucky Census, Sadie and Reese had been married 9 years places their marriage date at about 1891. This census also indicates that Sadie was born in January 1862 in Kentucky to Ohio-born parents. Sadie may have died about 1906.
Reece, age 47, widower, married at Carbon in Kanawha County, WV, 14 February 1907 LUCY LAKE, widow age 37.Lucy died 11 January 1908 at Carbon.Reece, age 50, widower, married 23 January 1909 JENNIE L. CAMPBELL, widow, age 33.She was his wife when he died in 1939.West Virginia Death Certificate # 17299.
