Your Henry Averill Workman runs us a merry chase, probably because that wasn't his name.He was Abiel H. Workman, and Henry was likely his middle name.I traced him by searching for Margaret May Workman in the 1880 census, and found Maggie May Workmon (their misspelling) age 6, daughter of Abiel H. Workmon and wife Susan. They were in Jamestown, Moniteau, Missouri.Abiel was 43; Susan 45.Abiel was a blacksmith, born in Ohio, father born in Kentucky, mother in Michigan.Susan and both parents were born in Ohio.Other children were Julia Paerl (?) age 19, born in Ohio.Hattie E. age 13, born in Minnesota.Hermin A., age 10, born in Missouri.Maggie May was born in Missouri.
Going backwards in time, in 1870 the family was in White Rock Township, McDonald County, Missouri. The census taker listed Abiel as Oliver H. Workman, 33, blacksmith, born in Ohio.Wife Susan is present, as are the three oldest children.
In 1860, they were in Cherokee Township, Logan County, Ohio.Abiel was listed there as just Abiel Workman, 24, blacksmith, born in Ohio.Susan, 25, born in Ohio.
1850 is a big disappointment because apparently Abiel's father had died.He was in Harrison Township, Logan County, Ohio.Abiel was 13, born in Ohio.Living with mother Elizabeth Workman, 53, born in Michigan.Other children were Daniel, 19, born in Ohio, and Martha, 16, born in Ohio.
1840 census for Ohio lists the most likely candidate for the father as Daniel M. Workman, age between 50-60.He was in Ohio, Logan County, Lake Township.Living in the same area were John Workman and James M. Workman, both about the same age range as Daniel.Only Daniel had children of the right age.
1830, Daniel M. Workman was in Ohio, Logan County, Miami Township.John and James M. were in Lake Township.
1820 Daniel M. and John were in Lake Township living 2 doors from each other. There the trail ends.
The 1880 census gives the place of birth for Abiel's father as Kentucky.I find nothing supporting that.
I have one person in my data that looks good to be this Daniel M. Workman. He was born about 1782 in Brownsville, Fayette County, PA, a son of Samuel and Nancy Workman. It is said that this Daniel moved to Jefferson County, Ohio and married a woman named Elizabeth. So far, I've found nothing more about him.
Samuel Workman was born 1757 in Somerset, New Jersey, son of Samuel Workman and Agnes Scott. That Samuel was a son of Abraham Workman and Annetje Smith.Abraham easily ties in with the rest of the Workman line that starts in Kings Stanley, Lasboro, Gloucester, England six or so generations earlier.Nicholas Workman died 1543 in that place.
There are two terribly speculative items there - that Daniel was Abiel's father, and that Daniel was the one I've indicated.
Good luck with this!
Sharon
