James--This is the stuff I came up with. 1st Workman I find is a "Mr Workman", b. 1517, Gloucestershire England. His wife, no 1st name given, was born 1521, Gloucestershire.
I am descended through their son, Nicholas, and this is his information.
Nicholas Workman, b. 1543, married Julyanne Gyllian.Children: Jane, Humphrey, Thomas, Edward, Alyse, John William, Richard, Willian, Jans.Nicholas emigrated to the Netherlands, Jans and John William are listed as having been born in Amsterdam. The family called itself "Woertman" while there.I have no proof, but judging from the time frame, and the fact that the Netherlands was the country of origin, this may have taken place when England was having one of it's many arguments about what was the one true religion, and kill all the rest.Hard to tell.I have a lot more information, if you can email me @[email protected], I'll send you what I have--most of it came from the Mormon geneaological site, and my mother knew some of the Workmans in the West Virginia and Ohio area. Let me know what Workmans you are related to, and I'll see what I can dig up for you.
