Margaret,
The answer to your question about Sarah, wife of Charles Word, Sr, is that she is still a mystery.I know a lot of people think that her birth name was Collins but I have not found any confirmation of that. There is a record in the vestry of St. Peter's Church in New Kent County, VA that says Charles was baptized on May 14, 1710.So, we just say Sarah Unknown.
The father of Charles, Sr was John Word, Jr and the only information we have on him is that he lived in New Kent County, VA and we guess at the year in which he might have been born and he obviously lived past 1710.John Word, Sr was the immigrant and came to Virginia in 1652.This date was obtained from a database named "Early VirginiaImmigrants" according to Mr. Franke's tree.He says that John sailed from Llandaff in the Welsh province of Glamorgan but there is no indication that he was born there. On the other hand, Llandaff is a suburban community of Cardiff on the Severn River opposite Bristol which might suggest that he had lived there. But that is an inference not a proof. He was indentured to a man named Gantlett.
In the 1980s, a Word family cousin of mine traveled to England and found a record of the birth of a man named John Word in Sussex in 1630 but were unable to establish firmly that this was our ancestor even though it's a credible date.
That's pretty much all we have that can be documented. The name of Ann Chiles often appears in this line but her dates and those of the Word men really don't match up at all so I am more than a little skeptical of her marriage to any of the Word men.
