Ray, I would be interested in a copy of the original handwritten letter between the 2 Johns. Is your copy a photocopy of the original hand written letter or is it transcribed? I do have a collection of letters, I will have to search through to see if any are Woolson letters. I will let you know if you send me your email address. Theron Webb Woolson is the son of Elijah Knight Woolson (1 Dec 1769 MA 22 Apr 1836 NY) and Rebekah Batchellor (12 Nov 1776 MA 10 Oct 1814 NY) who married on 7 Sep 1797 in MA. Elijah Knight Woolson is the son of Asa Joseph Woolson (23 Jul 1727 MA 18 Apr 1789 MA) and Elizabeth Knight (3 Jul 1736 MA d. aft 1791) who married 1 Jun 1762 in MA. Asa is the brother of Nathan (17 Dec 1731 MA).
Theron Webb Woolson (28 Oct 1811 NH 8 Nov 1872 IA) married on 1 Sep 1836 NY, Clarissa M. Simson (15 Apr 1812 NY - 7 May 1862 IA). 4 children are Mary Augusta (1 Sep 1838 NY); John Simson Woolson (6 Dec 1840 NY); Clara W. (11 Jan 1842 NY); Lydia Frances Fannie (23 Jul 1844 NY). Theron married second about 1865 in Iowa to Anna Carney (30 Jun 1829 IA 27 Dec 1892 IA). One child to them was James Leigh (abt 1866 IA).
In 1861 Theron was elected Iowa State Senator. In 1866 Theron Woolson took in as partnership in his law firm his son John Simson Woolson. His previous partner was his son in law Samuel McFarland who died in action during the Civil War.
Theron was also Mayor of Mt. Pleasant, Chairman of the Board of Supervisors and County Attorney.
He died of Cholera Morbus.
Theron's is the only Woolson family on the 1850 Census for Tonawanda, Erie, NY.
John Simson Woolson (6 Dec 1840 NY- 4 Dec 1899 IA) came from New York to Iowa in 1856 at 16 years old.
He was an Assistant Paymaster with the United States Navy aboard the Housatonic when it was torpedoed off Charleston NC and sank in ten minutes in 1862. His next assignment was as paymaster on the U.S.S. Monadnock and upon leaving the military he received a gold watch that is in the possession of his Great Grandson John Robert Woolson. He served in the Navy until 1865. He married Mira Thornton Bird (21 Jul 1844 OH 23 Nov 1933 NJ) on 9 Apr 1867 in Iowa. Children are Paul Bird Woolson (13 May 1868 IA 30 Jan 1953 IA); Ralph Theron (25 May 1871 IA); Miriam (19 May 1873 IA); Grace (17 Jul 1875 IA); Ruth (18 Oct 1880 IA).
His name is in "Historical Sketch & Alumni Record of Iowa Wesleyan College, 1917". After he returned home he continued his law studies and was admitted to the bar in 1866. In 1875 he elected to fill a vacancy as a state senator until 1890. On 17 Aug 1891 he was appointed by President Harrison as a U.S. District Judge and confirmed by the senate.
On 17 May 1997, Robin Woolson Abrams sent a Biography to the D.A.R. on John Simson Woolson.
