Dear William,

It would be helpful if you could tell us from where your Woolnough ancestor came when he came to Jamaica. As those of us who have conducted a fair amount of research on the Woolnough/Woolner name know, the name is not at all uncommon as one might at first suspect--especially in the various Suffolk records where the name is very common. It is not an easy name to research in spite of its seeming unusualness. Further, there are many Williams, Johns, Thomases etc etc with the surname of Woolnough recorded so just throwing the name out to see if anyone knows about it will probably not get you any results.

It looks as though your gt gt gt grandparents might have been part of the great emigration of English people into the colonies in the 1830's. That is when many of our Woolnough/Woolner ancestors came to this side of the Atlantic. Do you know if this Woolnough family came from Suffolk? The parish or area of that county (or any other) where they lived? Suffolk was particularly hard hit by the depression of the 1830's which caused many of its inhabitants to seek their fortunes in the new world.
