A Woolley family bible has come to light, containing additional information and corrections to my previous posting. Thomas William Woolley (b. 1860) married Flora Eliazbeth Turk (1861-1945), not Flora Masters, and there are also corrections to the list of children.
The marriage of Thomas William Woolley and Flora Eliazbeth Turk took place at Stalisfield Church, Kent, on 11 June 1885, and the bible was a wedding present from the Revd. JN Smith and family. (John Nathaniel Smith was vicar of Stalisfield from 1880 to 1887).
The bible contains a list of Thomas & Flora Woolley’s children [The notes in square brackets are my own comments]:
• Annie, born 20 March 1886, christened at Stalisfield Church vicarage
• Arthur, born 26 June 1887, christened at Stalisfield Church vicarage
• Margaret Emily, born 30 June 1889, christened at Lenham Church [married Lester Masters; died in New Zealand]
• Harry, born 9 July 1891, christened at Stalisfield Church vicarage [married Elsie Whitelaw Coomber (1888-1946) 21 July 1915; died 1 December 1956]
• Robert, born 28 July 1893, christened at Lenham Church [married Amy Allerton (1895-1981) in Hong Kong 18 April 1927; died Dundee 28 January 1972]
• Thomas, born 13 March 1896, christened at Lenham Church
• Lizzie, born 3 September 1898, christened at Lenham Church; one of twins, the other (Beth) died at birth;
• Louis, born 19 August 1902, christened at Lenham Church [married Anna Lilian Chisolm (?1908-?); died Canada 1952]
I am indebted to BA de la Plain for bringing the family bible to my attention, and I apologise for any confusion caused by the errors in my previous posting.
According to the Kent Archaeological Society website www.kentarchaeology.org.uk/Research/Libr/MIs/MIslist.htm, Stalisfield Churchyard contains a stone with the following inscription (recorded in September 1920 by Leland L Duncan):
• “Thomas WOOLLEY late of Darby’s Court of this parish, Farmer, 28th December 1792 aged 65. Mercy his Wife 20th November 1793 aged 58. Left issue surviving two sons and six daughters:– Thomas, James, Mary, Mercy, Ann, Susanna, Elizabeth and Rebecca”.
The following stones were recorded in Westwell Churchyard at the same time:
• “Thomas WOOLLEY late of this Parish, Farmer, 4th October 1827 aged 66. Left issue surviving by Sarah his wife one son and one daughter.
• James WOOLLEY of this Parish and formerly of Darbys Court, Stalisfield, 17th August 1840 aged 70”.
Lenham, Stalisfield and Westwell are all neighbouring Kent parishes.
