To Sandra Reeves
Hi!. Nathan Woolford who appears on this website and I are definitely related. The earliest real data we share is of Woolfords fleeing the Siege of Paris in the 1870s. They first arrived in Western Australia gradually progressing eastwards. We separately knew of a vague connection with Germany as well as the definite Paris one . According to my Mother the Woolfords were in Germany because they were scholars and assisted with a translation of the Bible. There seem to have been very many watchmakers and jewellers amongst them, including the Newcastle ones you mention.
However I feel confident there was a London base as well because my Mother believed one of our Woolford forbears had a sister, Louisa, who disgraced them by running away and joining a London circus, Phillip DuCrow's, in which she performed on horseback and was remembered by Dickens in one of his novels. She was a famous beauty of the day and married duCrow. I think there are some links too with famous early American film actors. Acording to my mother one of these was Maxine Elliot (a pseudonym) but I cant tell you any more than that.
As you have observed, there are many family members with shared personal names. In my Mother's family there were some Harrys and Louisas. My grandfather Harry Woolford was born in Adelaide where his father, another Harry I think, had a watchmaking business in Hindley St and they later came to Melbourne. They were a large family . (Not all SA Woolfords are related to us) My grandfather had a brother Andrew who was a watchmaker also, and the shop in Chapel St Melbourne bore his name long after he had gone.
It would be super if you could cast some light on family members who remained in England as clearly some did. Nathan Woolford's uncle has been researching the family and I responded to his (N's) entry on this site. He intended to set up a website with his uncle's findings later this year. Perhaps you have already contacted him.
Looking forward to hearing back from you,
