William,

You're correct on the list of children, "John E." is a typo. It should be "Joseph E."

The list of children comes from the 1850 census. Missouri, Linn County, 50th District, p. 38b, ln. 10, Roll M432_405.

Holland, John 54 M VA Farmer 3000
Elizabeth* 46 F NC
Martha S. 16 F MO
John T. 12 M MO
Mildred 11 F MO
Joseph 8 M MO

*This Elizabeth is likely Elizabeth Relph and not Elizabeth Wooldridge. From the Linn County Genweb site (no source cited). "Mrs. Elizabeth Holland, wife of John Holland, is claimed to have been the second burial in the Linneus Cemetery, which event occurred in 1841." http://www.rootsweb.com/~molinn/1stdeath.html

I looked at every "Holland" family in Missouri in the 1850 census trying to find a John that was the right age for my GGG Grandfather (I didn't find any), but I missed this family as they were indexed under the name "Halland".

Additional children are identified in Col. John Holland's will. I have not seen the will, but it is abstracted as follows:

"Name: John Holland
I, ....to my wife, Elizabeth; to my daughter, Mildred; to my son, John Thomas; to my son, Joseph Edward; to my three daughters: Mary Susan, Sarah Elizabeth, and Ann Virginia; to my children, William H., John T., Mildred W., and Joseph E. It is my wish that my wife and my friend, Robert Hoyle should execute my will. This 19 Feb. 1855 Robert C. Combs and A. W. Flournoy Proven 13 Aug. 1855 Jacob Smith, P. B. J."

Evidence of Col. John's marriage to Elizabeth Wooldridge comes from an entry from Hiram T. French's "Idaho History" Lewis Publishing, 1914, p. 945. In the entry for Joseph E. Holland, it states: "Mr. Holland was born in Linn county, Missouri, September 22, 1841, and is a son of John and Elizabeth (Woolridge) Holland, natives of Virginia who removed to Missouri in 1830 and engaged in farming and stock raising until their deaths."

My assumption is that this is the same John Holland and Elizabeth Wooldridge that married 8 Nov 1821 in Prince Edward County, Virginia.

Brian
