In 1912, went to visit his mother-in-law in Boynton where she had moved due to contracting TB and being advised to leave Illinois do to the cold winters. He liked what he saw, and instead of returning home, went into pardnership[ with his brother-in-law George Meredith who was in the farming business. He made more money working for George in six months than in a year in the mines back home. After two years, he got land of his own and raised tomatoes and peppers. He acquired an additional 30 acres on what is now the NE portion of I-95 and Woolbright Road interchange for $10,000 and started raising pineapples in 1918. When they began developing the farm, they only had a dirt road but, in 1921, the county finally graveled a portion and called it Woolbright Road on county maps. It was currently extends west from A1A about four miles. He sold out in 1926 during the land boom that hit Palm Beach for $100,000. Within a year or two after than, land prices collapsed and he actually collected less than half the sales price but invested what he got wisely. The Boynton City Cemetery is just east of Exit 43 (Woolbright Rd. off-ramp) off I-95. . [The Centralia Illinois Families had his middle name as Erastus which is in error.] Research: Listed as foreman of #4 in 1908 City Directory Wifes Notes... Notes: Grand-daughter of George W. They had three children: Ida, Ella and George. Ella married William Edgar, brother-in-law of Ida's. George helped Thomas Edward get started in fruit farming in Boynton in the 1910's. HIS FATHER Doctor Alexander (Dock) WOOLBRIGHT Birth: 25 Sep 1854 Place: Red Bay, Franklin Co. Ala. Death: 15 Nov 1909 Place: Centralia, Illinois Burial: Place: Both Buried In Joliff Cem. Off Joliff Bridge Rd. Centralia Education: Ga. Southern, Tifton, Ga. Father: James Gordon WOOLBRIGHT (1818, b. S. C. -died after the civil war in Illinois. . Mother: Elizabeth (Nancy) Martin (1817-1864) Marriage: 7 Mar 1872 Place: Central City, Marion Co. Ill. HIS MOTHER Martha Jane (Mattie) Warren Birth: 2 Aug 1851 Place: Greenbrier, Tenn. Death: 7 May 1928 His grandfather was James Gordon, Husband: James Gordon WOOLBRIGHT Birth: 16 Sep 1818 Place: Union Co. South Carolina Father: Jesse WOOLBRIGHT (1790-1860) Mother: Unknown Wife: Elizabeth (Nancy) Martin Birth: 1817 Place: Virginia Death: Circa 1864 Place: Alabama. Notes: On 28 Nov 1840, James Woolbright registered a deed for a purchase of land, Franklin Co. Alabama. The 1850 Franklin Co. Alabama Census lists a head of household, born in N. C. (?) in1818 with wife Nancy, born 1817 also of N.C. (?) with seven children; William, b. 1836; Samuel, b. 1838; Elizabeth, b. 1841; [James], b. 1842; Henry, b. 1845; Jessie, b. 1846; and Buril, b, 1848. 1860 Census, Tremont, Itawamba Co. Miss. lists James (b. in S. C.) and Nancy, (b. Va.); six children; Jas. M, b. 1842; Jessie V., b. 1846; Buirl Mc, b. 1848; John R., b, 1850; Moses M., b. 1852 and Doctor A.*, b. 1854, all born in Alabama. [Henry must have died.] Also, Samuel, now married to Mary, age 19 with daughter Mary A(lex), age one year? Asumption is made on basis of dates and related geography that this James is a son of Jesse's. * {Also, see Dock Woolbright, 1900 census, Brookside TWP, Clinton Co. Illinois.} There is no record of James Gordon Woolbright serving in the War but , according to family lore, he was persuaded by Mr. Lincoln's arguments and took a firm stand against slavery as a way of life, falling into disfavor with his neighbors for freeing his slaves prematurely. He and his family moved to Clinton Co. Ill. prior to 1865 and over the next several years so did several of his younger sons [Moses, John, Dock], Samuel having already made the move previously about 1862. Nancy apparenly died during the war, as the wife who moved with him to Illinois was a second wife whose name is not known. She was reputed to be a widowed neighbor lady who was very good to the children and very loving to his large family. There is recorded an Elizabeth, age 56, from Ky. in 1870 Clinton Co. Census living in household of son, James [step-mother]. [The middle name, Gordon, came from Lowell Woolbright and generally is the one occurring in most records. On the other hand, J. L. Bauer, grandson of Dock Alexander Woolbright, has his middle name as Wilson.] Research: Dave Axe; 1850 Census, Franklin Co. Al.; Lowell Woolbright, oral history , from Thomas E. Woolbright, Jr. 315 N. E. 8th Ave, Delray Beach, Fl. 33483-5524 (407) 276- 4715. James Lee Bauer, Marshelltown, Iowa includes a son, Turner, b. after Dock, must have died at birth? Lovesta Ione, the wife of Thomas Edward Woolbright, Sr. has in her Bible in possession of Thomas Edward, Jr. the notation that Great-grandfather James Gordon Woolbright was born in Vicksburg, Miss. as was Doc Alexander, Moses and Elizabeth Woolbright Mitchel. This is probably one of those handed down mis-understandings that persists. All of James Gordon's siblings were born in Union Co.S.C. Most of them moved to Jackson Co. c1830. As far as I can assertain, no Woolbrights were ever in Miss. (or Alabama) prior to 1836 and then only in the eastern part. (See son, Jame's notes regarding time and place of her death.)
