Donna,
Yes, it is confusing. The James Woodside you found in the 1870 census is definitely the son of James Woodside (referred to often as James Woodside, Sr.) and Agnes Gault.
It is my understanding that his middle name was Drayton but I have not made any effort to confirm this as I don't consider it very important for my research.I do findthat you cannot at all rely on middle initials (and much more) that you find in censusrecords. He never married and as far as is known had no children.
As for the James Woodside who was the son of James Woodside and Jane Woodside (often found as Jennie or Janie but it was actually Jane), a Woodside connection tells me that an envelope addressed to him exists and it is addressed to James A. Woodside, Jr.We have theories about what the A stands for but no proof. We also don't feel convinced that his father was also James A. Woodside. He may have been, again no proof. This James Woodside became a physician but died as a very young man, unmarried.Note that his tombstone in Fairview Presbyterian Cemetery does not show any initial after his name, nor does that of his father.Nor does that of the James Woodside who was married to Agnes Gault. All of them are in Fairview Cemetery.
We assume that James son of James and Agnes is also buried at Fairview but there is no marker.I will check with my Woodside relative in S.C. about Drayton being his middle name and whether it was the middle name of any of the others and let you know but it will take some time as he doesn't use computers.Again, for my purposes it has never been an issue since I feel I have accurately identified all of these individuals.Note that use of middle names was very uncommon among these people and in these early days. You do find a few instances but they are rare.
As for the Drayton connection, what I have is family traditon which passed through many hands over the years and I don't think it is totally accurate but the story as it was told to me many years ago is that when James Woodside and Agnes Gault came to S.C. (which was about 1807) they arrived at Charleston and lived there for a period of time and during that time Agnes became very close friends with the daughter of Dr. John Drayton. I have never seen anything to document this but I think it could well be true and account for Agnes having a son named James Drayton Woodside.
Note that James Woodside who married Agnes Gault was born in Ireland and did not come to the United States until after 1800, and James son of Thomas Woodside was also born in Ireland and was several years old before his family came to the U.S.The Draytons, as I understand it, were not an Irish family so connections this early seem uncertain. But you might ask people who give these various individuals Drayton as a middle name for their documentation. Maybe they have it but I have done lots of reading of original records and I haven't seen it.Would be interesting if we could puzzle it all out and it might lead to more understanding of the complex relationships of the Woodside family. What members of the family are you researching.Maybe I can help.Preston
