You may already have this, but the James P. Woodside in the 1870 Greenville Co.,SC census is the son of James Woodside Sr. and Agnes or Nancy (Nancy was a common nickname for Agnes at the time and she is found by both names)Gault. He never married. The Sarah Woodside found with him is his sister. She also never married. She was usually known as Sally.Emma Woodside is their neice, son of their brother John. His first wife died when Emma was small and she lived with her aunt and uncle for a time.John remarried and had other children.
These so-called James Draywon Woodsides have caused a lot of confusion.I have done a great deal of research on this Woodside family and also am in touch with others researching them. There is no evidence that the senior James Woodside (who came to S.C. from Ireland) had any middle name. His nephew James Woodside, son of Thomas, also never has been found with a mddle name toour knowledge. This James Woodside, son of Thomas, had a son named James but we have evidence that his middle initial was A.The name so far is not known. He died unmarried as a young man and is buried in Fairview Presbyterian Cemetery as are so many others of this family. The son of James Woodside Sr, the one you were asking about, supposedly was named James Drayton Woodside.Family tradition says that Agnes Gault Woodside became a close friend of the daughter of John Drayton of Charleston and that may be the source of the use of Drayton in this instance.Hope this is some help and not just adding to the confusion.Preston Traylor
