ELIZABETH VICKERS WOODS
DURHAM -- Elizabeth Vickers Woods, 84, passed away on Sunday April 8, 2001. She was born June 14, 1916, in Durham. She was preceded in death by her husband, W. Henry Woods, Jr., and a son, Eugene Kirk Woods. She was the daughter of E. T. Vickers, Sr., and Sarah Latta Vickers of Durham.
Surviving: children, Walter Henry Woods, III, Amy Vickers Woods and Elizabeth Woods Elkins, all of Durham, Christopher Logan Woods of Pace, Florida and Gail Woods Lutz of Greensboro. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Walter Henry Woods, IV, Edwin Kirk Woods, Sarah Elizabeth Elkins, Caroline Kenion Elkins, Erin Lutz Omland, Avery Marcelle Lutz and her great granddaughter, Addison Taylor Woods. Mrs. Woods is also survived by her sisters, Berta Vickers Ellis of Durham and Hazeline Vickers Bilins of Ft. Johnson, New York and her brother, E.T. Vickers, Jr., of Durham.
Mrs. Woods graduated from Durham High School in 1933, where she was a member of the National Honor Society. Upon graduation she became a buyer for Belk Leggett Co. and worked for many years before retiring to raise her children. In addition to her role as a mother and homemaker, she assisted her husband in developing the family business including The Dutch Village Motel.
As a young adult, Mrs. Woods was active in the Durham community. She was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School. She participated as an officer in the Parent Teacher's Association, she was past chairwoman of the Outgrown Clothing Drive of Durham and was President of Ladies' Auxiliary of the Durham Elk's Club. Mr. and Mrs. Woods enjoyed their long time membership in the NC Aero Club.
To Mrs. Woods' large and dedicated family of caregivers the Woods family extends their deepest gratitude.
Interment will be at the family plot in Maplewood Cemetery Annex B at 11 a.m. Tuesday. At 12 noon, Tuesday a celebration of the life of Elizabeth V. Woods will be held at Asbury United Methodist Church.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Oxford Orphanage or the Carolina Meadows Retirement Community Adult Day Activity Program.
