I found the answer to my question through the 1860 census. He was a son of Francis Woodruff and Mary Trowbridge, and then I found someone's wealth of data on Rootsweb that traced the family back to John Woodruff who arrived from England to Lynn, MA in 1640s, moved to Southampton, LI, and became one of the founders of Elizabethtown, NJ. Records went beyond John several generations to the 1500s.
