George was my gt uncle, possibly base born son of my gt. grandmother Mary Woodland, born in Somerset. The birthplace of Liverpool has arisen from notifcation from his mother in her application to Barnardos when she placed two other sons in their care, and on George's enlistment papers for WW1 service. This seems to be a very strange place of birth, given that Mary was born in Somerset, and geographic mobility in those days was fairly limited.
Later, Mary cohabited with William Arthur Strachan, and together they had 6 children, two daughters, four sons. They moved around south west England a bit, with the first 3 kids being born in Torquay, Devon; a son in Cornwall, and the remainder in Taunton, Somerset. These children were registered with the surname of Strachan.
The relationship broke down, and in 1911, Mary put two children into Barnardo's care, and then, in 1912, gave birth to a final son, registered as Woodland. In the 1901 census, and the information to Barnardos, George Woodland's surname was shown as Strachan. During WW1 he enlisted with the Dorsetshire Regiment, but for some reason as George STRONG. On of the pronunciations of Strachan is similar to this, so maybe the person enlisting him misheard. George was killed at Arras on 3 July 1917, and never married. I am very interested in finding out not only the date of his birth, but whether or not Liverpool is the correct place. His entry in the Commonwealth War Graves Commission is shown as both Strong & Woodland; and his name on the cenotaph in Taunton is George Strong.
