I know a few months have passed since the last posting, but I just happened on this message board.

A few weeks ago I downloaded a gedcom file from ancestry.com because it included more than one branch of my family tree. In the 1700's some of the Woodhulls married some of the numerous Smith family members. This file was posted by jmmccoy@home.com. There was a problem with the file when I imported it into Family Tree Maker and, supposedly her sources were in the wrong field, so I couldn't see any of them. I'm going to contact her to see what they were.

Anyway, in her file Richard Woodhull II (son of Richard and Deborah (possibly Crewe)married Temperance Fordham (dau of Rev. Jonah Fordham) on August 19, 1680 in New York. She shows them with 6 children: Nathaniel, John, Dorothy, Richard III, Josiah, and Temperance.

The other day I ran across files posted by two different people that showed Richrd II marrying Temperance Topping (dau of John Topping and Sarah White) on November 20, 1684. One (posted by lvoller@usaor.net)has them with 3 children:

Elizabeth married ?? Jayne
Sarah married ?? Jayne
Temperance married William Helme

The other file (posted by CalOwen@mediaone.net) has these 3 plus 5 more:

Dorothy b. 2/13/1686-1687 in Southampton NY
Richard III b. 11/2/1691 in Long Island NY
Nathaniel b. before 1695 in Southampton NY
Josiah b 9/9/1695 in Brookhaven, Suffolk Co NY
Temperance b October 1697 in Brookhaven and married William Helme (son of Thomas Helme & Mary Mills) ca 1710
John b ca 1698 in Southampton NY

Is it possible that Lawrence Woodhull had a brother where another Richard may have come from? It seems that you sometimes need a program to keep track of these people. Actually, this isn't too bad - you should see the interplay with the Smiths from Smithtown starting in the 1700's.

Looking for clarification also.
