From the book Covington County, AL History 1821-1976 page 268--- Woodham---
Among the earliest pioneer settlers to come to this area were the Woodhams.
The Woodham clan can be traced as far back as 1709 in Europe, but for the benefit of space we will begin with the marriage of John Westly Woodham to Amanda Ard at Echo (now Ozark), Alabama in Dale County on April 4, 1854. The following year the newlyweds moved from Echo and settled at a little logging camp in south central Alabama.
The little community was later named Poley, Alabama. .
Part time the Woodhams farmed for a living, producing good crops from the rich soil near the Poley Creek swamp.
Their home was built off what is now Highway 84 on the land now owned by the Opp country Club, and until a few years ago some remnants of the old home place could still be seen.
Fourteen children were born to this union from 1855 to 1878 and today their descendants make up a sizable part of the population of Opp.
These original fourteen descendants are buried at either Bethel, Hickory Grove or in the Opp City cemetery.
Death claimed Mrs. Woodham on February 17, 1904. John Woodham died six years later on November 2, 1910. Both were buried at Hickory Grove Church.
